Competition for primary school students: Find “The community’s tree”

Written by Tamás Réka on July 1, 2016

In June 2016, Pogány-havas Association started promoting  the cultural and ecological importance of old trees for primary school students from Harghita and Covasna county  as target group, from the following villages: Păuleni-Ciuc, Cozmeni, Tăietura, Mugeni, Mărtiniș, Sânpaul, Ojdula, Cernatul de Jos, Cernatul de Sus. The projects goal was to carry out exciting school and extracurricular activities combining both culture and nature conservation. The children participating in the activities were invited by the association to a three phased competition, in which the mission was to identify as many old trees as possible in the participating villages and surroundings, worthy to be selected in the “The community’s tree” contest. In the same time special attention was given to collect and document still alive cultural aspects (such as legends, tales, folksongs, handcrafted items, artistic interpretations, traditional methods of use, folkloric symbols etc.) related to trees in local cultural heritage. This competition will continue in the 2016-2017 school year with a monitoring program of the selected trees and a quiz based on the identified values of such ancient trees. The award ceremony will take place as a community event in order to involve even more people and raise awareness.
