Europe’s wood pastures in the European Parliament
abcd
On 17 November 2015, our seminar was held in the European Parliament on wood pastures and the CAP (Common Agricultural Policy).
The initiative was organized by the Pogány-havas Association (Romania) who joined up with EFNCP (European Forum on Nature Conservation and Pastoralism) and Birdlife Europe. The event was hosted and generously supported by the Romanian MEP Sógor Csaba (European People’s Party).
Co-hosting the seminar were MEP Clara Aguilera (Spain) from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament and Catherine Bearder (United Kingdom) from the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe.
The aim of the policy seminar was to present the wood pastures of Europe within the context of the CAP and raise awareness among politicians about wood pastures, their multiple values, vulnerabilities and conservation challenges. Study cases were presented from three countries (Spain, Romania, Sweden) and several recommendations were made for adjusting the current CAP in order to assure the sustainability of the wood pastures.
Around 130 delegates listened to the lively presentations and our feeling is that the event was a big success. It was also a wonderful example of collaboration between policy makers, civil society and academia for the sustainability of these important components of Europe`s farming landscape.
